Magnavox Blu-ray Disc Player Nb530mgx

Magnavox Blu-ray Disc Player Nb530mgx Review

I purchased this Blu-ray player at a Walmart for 8. I had previously purchased a Phillips BD-Live player for my parents, and decided that I wanted one too. Well they were out, but they had one of these and the price looked great, so I bought it.

I am impressed. There is negligible (if any at all!) difference between my Magnavox and my parents' Phillips. The quality is beyond excellent, the sound, the compatibility, comparable to the higher end Phillips. The only thing missing from this Blu-ray player is the ethernet port, but you can also update Blu-ray players with a DVD or an SD card, and yes, this Blu-ray player has an SD card port.

So I popped in "Twister" on Blu-ray, one of my favorite movies, and was astonished at the picture quality. Absolutely gorgeous color, sharp, crisp images and clear as crystal sound. I feel like I got this Blu-ray player at a steal considering the price listed here. I am very pleased with it, and plan on purchasing the new Star Trek movie when it finally arrives on Blu-ray (and out of the theater, but I'm impatient like that!). Highly recommended for those of us on a budget!

~J.W.

Magnavox Blu-ray Disc Player Nb530mgx Feature

  • Full HD Resolution 1080p Video Output
  • Up-Converts Standard DVD's to 1080p Resolution
  • 24FPS For Cinema Like Picture Quality
  • HDMI Output (HDMI 1.3a Lossless High Bit Rate Audio Stream Output and Deep Color Processing - 10/12 bit)
  • BONUSVIEW to enjoy advanced Picture-in-Picture content

Magnavox Blu-ray Disc Player Nb530mgx Overview

Experience the superior picture quality of Blu-ray movies in full 1080p high-definition on your HDTV. DVDs will also look their best thanks to 1080p upconversion on compatible HDTVs that have an HDMI port. The NB500MG9 can play CDs and JPEG photos that have been burned onto CD-Rs, too. Additional highlights include component video output and a digital coaxial output for connecting compatible surround sound systems.

LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Interesting .... the initial reviews written 5 or 6 months ago were ecstatic - everyone was thrilled with the product, as was I. The most recent reviews reflect the fact that the dvd player often stops working after a few months.

When my player conked out, I contacted LG and they fedexed me a shipping label and offered to fix the player free of charge and paid for shipping both ways. They turned the repair around in less than a week and it is working perfectly so far now that the defective part has been replaced. They seem to be aware of the fact that they have a problem with this model, probably the result of receiving numerous complaints.

I suggest that anyone who encounters this product failure contact LG directly.

Sylvania NB501SL9 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player

Sylvania NB501SL9 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player Review

I wasn't expecting much for the price but was pleasantly surprised. This machine does almost everything except handle Netflix real-time movies. It handles normal Blu-Ray as well as extended features like interactive items found on some Blu-Ray discs. It handles regular DVD's as well and so far I have had only one Blu-Ray disc that it couldn't read. It turned out to be a bad disc and when a new replacement disc was sent, it worked just fine.
I am hoping that Sylvania will come out with a model that can handle real-time Netflix because currently the only Blu-Ray machines that can do so are the LG BD300 (Amazon's LG BD370 also supports Real-Time Netflix and costs about 0) and the Samsung BD-P2500 (Amazon has the BD-P3600 which costs about 0).

The only negative comment I have about this machine is that it takes a pretty long time to get running. Insert a Blu-Ray DVD and it takes about 2 minutes to get up to speed and load the DVD's menu. Hit the wrong button (like Play instead of Select) and you will spend a couple of more minutes while it reloads the DVD's menu information again.

So other than startup speed, the machine plays every DVD I have, some of which are pretty worn by now.
Great machine for the money.

Sylvania NB501SL9 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player Feature

  • HDMI Deep Color - HDMI connection delivers progressive color in all modes plus exceptionak home-theater sound when connected.
  • Full high-definition video playback - Watch movies in the highest picture quality available for your HDTV

Sharp Aquos BDHP21U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Sharp Aquos BDHP21U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

This a very good and decent blu-ray player. It's very easy use and displays great HD picture from blu-ray movies near HD for standard DVDs. Overall, a recommended player but there might be better players out there that might be worth it.

Sharp Aquos BDHP21U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Feature

  • Sharp BDHP21U Blu-ray Disc Player
  • Full HD 1080p/24 fps video output
  • HDMI digital Interface
  • 7.1 Ch digital audio output
  • Quick Start Mode: enjoy content quickly without delay

Sharp Aquos BDHP21U 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Overview

While DVD's look great on your new widescreen TV, especially through HDMI hookup of your DVD player, they really deliver less than half of the resolution than a typical Blu-ray disc. DVD=480. A Blu-Ray disc=1080. Movies seen in Blu-Ray optimize the performance of your HDTV screen. Pictures are sharper, clearer, with more definitive colors that deliver visual experiences as close to reality as possible. You need to move up to Blu-Ray Now you can enjoy the best of 1080p video on your LCD TV (not included) with the AQUOS Blu-ray Disc Player by Sharp. Your existing standard definition DVD library can look better than even because Blu-ray Disc players are backwards compatible with your DVDs. By optimizing standard DVD playback signals (when displayed on a 1080p capable HDTV with HDMI technology), the player can deliver more picture and sound quality. Digital images recorded onto a CD-RW/R can be viewed in a slideshow format on screen, delivering both still and video images for greater versatility. Blu-ray technology lets you take advantage of the latest surround sound formats such as Dolby TrueHD. This means you will enjoy high quality lossless 7.1 Channel digital surround that is bit for bit the equivalent of a master recording. Your Blu-Ray player will also continue to play DVD and CD discs. It's fully backward compatible to plays all these formats. So experience what you've been missing and return to those you've grown accustomed to. We think you'll really notice the difference that the Sharp BD-HP21U AQUOS Blu-ray Disc Player delivers. It's your time to go for Blu-Ray. Video DAC Pop-up Menu System Display On/Off Parental Lock Quick Start (after preload) - proprietary Sharp technology allows you to enjoy viewing high definition content on your big screen quicker than most other Blu-ray Disc Players Media - BD-ROM/R/RE (BDMV Only), DVD Video, DVD-RW/R, DVD+RW/R, CD-DA/CD-RW/R, & JPEG-CD-RW/R

Pioneer BDP-120 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Pioneer BDP-120 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

This is my first stand-alone player and it's hard not to compare it with the PS3. I love my PS3 because it does everything. Been wanting to buy a standalone player for a while and can't seem to agree on any one particular brand or model, mostly due to cost. Lately price has been dropping below 0. Was leaning toward the Samsung P1500, best features and overall price until Amazon had the Pioneer on sale. Pioneer only makes high end electronics. I am overall very satisfy with this unit. Load time on this unit depends on the disc. First time buyer, be aware that blu-ray players loads a lot slower than DVD players. It can take up to a minute or more to load a disc (PS3 loads within 15 seconds). This is consider fast compare to previous generation that sometimes take up to three minutes. Menu are simple and user friendly. Remote control is well made, a little too big. Unit is simple and elegant. Has all the necessary onboard sound decoders. I think this is a good buy for a mid level player. Only complaint is the noise it generates (grinding) when loading or searching of the disc. Curious if other players make the same noise?

Pioneer BDP-120 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Feature

  • 1920 x 1080p, 24fps resolution for unrivaled picture quality
  • Profile 2.0 KURO LINK BD-Live Compliant

Pioneer BDP-120 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Overview

Your widescreen HDTV and your home-theater sound system are only a fraction of the home-theater experience. The Pioneer BDP120 BD-Live Blu-ray Disc Player plays Blu-Ray Discs to display at 1080p resolution - the finest disc resolution around. Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

This is one of the cheaper models yes, but it's still a great machine.

I've been using it for about 4 months now. I've only had a few issues with the player, one, it wouldn't play the new Skynet version of T2. I ended up having to update the firmware and while the Blu-ray took a long time to load, it did eventually play the film. By doing so I realized that the firmware I had was one of the first updates available (I believe there's now over 20) so as soon as you get this hooked up you're going to want to update.

Second, the player seems to have an issue with DVD-R's. For some reason when I put a DVD-r that's not formatted to a DVD (meaning I've just dropped various video files onto the disc) it doesn't want to play it. The picture menu comes up, even though the files are all AVI. So if I want to watch a movie I've burned I have to format it to a DVD using the program "convertxtodvd." Not too big of a deal though.

These two issues are small and for me definitely do not detract from the score or quality of the machine.

I guess I do have one more complaint, but this concerns most players also, you still have to buy hdmi cables for the best quality picture, I think that these should be included.

Alright, done with the bad, now onto the good.

*It's easy to hook up and figure out.

*for most Blu's it's fast loading.

*it's hackable for those of you who want to play DVD's from other regions.

*the quality is great for being low priced it is IMO one of the better players that I've had the pleasure of using.

*It's very sleek looking. Looks great sitting next to my flat panel.

So there you have it. The good outweighs the bad. Very high quality machine, exactly what you'd expect from a brand like Sony. So what are you waiting for? Buy it!

Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Feature

  • Full HD 1080/60 p & 24p True Cinema Video Output
  • Dolby TrueHD decoding built-in Dolby TrueHD /DTS-HD bitstream out over HDMI (V1.3)

  • Precision Cinema Progressive HD

Panasonic DMP-BD605K - Blu-Ray disc player - upscaling - YouTube - black

Panasonic DMP-BD605K - Blu-Ray disc player - upscaling - YouTube - black Review

When my DMP-BD30 started pausing during 'Twilight', and the regular glitches on every movie (like starting every movie without sound, pausing and going black for 5 seconds, then continuing just fine) were at last driving me nuts, I knew it was time for a firmware update. When I saw the BDM-BD605K at Samsclub I figured I'd get my 1st machine with internet connectivity (other than the HD DVD machines). The price was awesome!(7)

The panasonic seems to take 20 to 25 seconds to start a movie or to detect "no disk'. -Faster than a lot of players including my previous ones. I hear a new Samsung is even faster, but Amazons reviewers always rate the Panasonics a whole star higher than Samsungs. I've been pleased with every Panasonic piece I've owned.

Technology is moving lightning-fast and Blu-ray is only improving each month. I was thrilled to see such a fantastic high-def picture when I previewed 'Underworld-Rise of the Lycans'. Even the movie previews were outstanding.

The prosessing is of the latest design (PHL plus included) and I see a clear difference on my 60" Elite Kuro PLasma. This model will bitstream all the newest hi-def audio formats I'm used to for decoding by my Onkyo 905 receiver. I understand that this model is really a repackaged BD-60 with a free (cheap) HDMI cable. It's 60% the size of the BD-30. The tray is finally in the center. I can't wait to explore more of the features (24P, viera link, SD card slot, USB and Ethernet connections).

I know I'll have this model for a long while and I highly recomend it to all.

x.v.Color
Thanks to the adoption of a newly approved international color standard called xvYCC (an option in the HDMI v1.3 spec and which Sony participated in helping to create), the color space has been greatly expanded. 1.8 times as many natural colors as existing HDTV signals will now be faithfully reproduced. (x.v.Color capability is available on select BRAVIA televisions, Blu-ray Disc players and the PlayStation3 computer entertainment system.)

24p True Cinema Video Output
Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are videotaped at 24p. Seizing an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. The BDP-S300 wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p output capability. The benefits are smoother and more natural-looking images that make watching television an experience to remember. (24p video input capability is available on select BRAVIA televisions.)

BRAVIA Theater Sync
Go beyond simple audio and video transmission with the "one-touch play" remote control feature that allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. (Available on select BRAVIA theater home A/V systems and components.)

Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

After thoroughly enjoying my HDTV and the high-quality of video and sound associated with HD from my cable/satellite and DVD upconverter I was eager to upgrade to see my favorite films on blu ray. I waited for several things before purchasing my first blu unit...for a couple of features I wanted to be available at my price point, for the blu ray/HD DVD battle to be settled and for the versions of firmware to be more universal. Once that was done all of my needs pointed to this unit and I have been happy since.

Up front I will say there are several things that drew me to this unit. One was the Sony brand (I am a loyal Sony user but I am also not a blind follower). Second was the fact that I also needed a new sound system to handle the quality of the blu ray sound and this Sony blu ray player was a companion to the Sony sound system I wanted to get (the HTSS360). The two look great together with identical black color, faceplate size and design. For both the blu ray player and the sound system for under 0 it was an easy sell.

The one other very important feature this unit had for me was the on-board processing of the True Dolby HD and HD DTS soundtracks. Having the blu ray player itself process these means you do not need to have the HD sound processed by your sound system-you can have these sent through the PCM channel and they are a definite upgrade from the regular 5.1 soundtracks. To explain, it's like the difference between a HDTV that is HDTV 'ready' and one that has a built-in tuner. In this case the receiver or sound system (with the PCM) is 'HD sound ready' and the blu player acts as the tuner. So you do NOT have to have a receiver or sound system that specifically processes HD audio to enjoy it.

This player was simple to set up with the connection of the HDMI cable and the nice-looking, user-friendly, on-screen menu it offers. The on-screen menu is used for a quick set-up and can easily be accessed to make any changes to your settings.

As for performance, the loading time for this unit is much quicker than I expected as a first-time blu user. It takes just a couple of seconds longer than my DVD upconverter but the video and sound quality are worth the wait of 2-3 extra seconds. Other people who have earlier blu models say the loading time on this unit is pretty quick comparatively. As I said, the picture produced and the HD sound are spectacular and make me very happy making the blu upgrade.

Other thoughts:

Yes, as others have mentioned there is no 'eject' button on the remote and it would be nice to have one. Otherwise, the remote has every function on it I would want. I love being able to pull up menus for the discs while the film is in progrss rather than having to stop playback to get to the menu.

It does not have the built-in wi-fi that is now available on other units but firmware updates can be done by connecting an Internet connection (or you can even download updates from Sony's website and update the player with a disc). I almost spent the extra money on the S560 player with the built-in wi-fi but from what I have heard it does not support streaming Netflix (which would have been my main reason for wanting the built-in wi-fi to begin with). I have not seen any BD live content that seems (to me) worth connecting to the Internet for.

So far every disc I have watched (both new releases and older ones) loaded with no problems and played seamlessly.

This unit does indeed upconvert DVDs but I didn't see any improvement over the Sony 5-disc upconverter I already have and plan to continue to use the upconverter for my DVDs and just use the blu player for the blu discs.

I do wish there was a 5-disc changer available but as of yet there is not one to my knowledge. I planned to wait for a 5-disc changer but with blu ray you don't normally have a movie split over two discs as you did with standard DVDs so I decided to go ahead and purchase this blu unit and I have thoroughly enjoyed it and have no reservations in recommending it.

Panasonic DMP-BD70V Blu-ray Disc/VHS Multimedia Player

Panasonic DMP-BD70V Blu-ray Disc/VHS Multimedia Player Review

I purchased this to replace my DVD/VCR combo but this doesn't record to VHS. Also the VHS video looked crappy compared to a 1080p disc. (duh) I thought the upconverting would be better. The blu-ray video looked superb and I was using the RGB inputs, not HDMI! I like that it has an instant-on feature which is really just standby. It doesn't show a clock when powered off. Also, the audio would not play when plugged into my 1st gen 700 series panasonic blu-ray receiver. Youtube loads fast when connected to internet however I didn't find search feature. Not sure if there is one. I just got it yesterday. It's great if you have VHS tapes you can't replace.
