Sony BDVT11 / BDV-T11 / BDV-T11 Blu-ray Disc/DVD 5.1 Home Theater System

Sony BDVT11 / BDV-T11 / BDV-T11 Blu-ray Disc/DVD 5.1 Home Theater System Review

I have had a blu ray drive on my computer but this is my first component blu ray drive. It was incredibly easy to setup. The menus were a little confusing at times, but with the manual I could find everything I wanted to tweak. I must say I was impressed until I started listening to music and watching blu rays. The Bass was great from the sub, and the surround speakers immersed you in the product. But the fronts were just too weak and tinny sounding. I decided I would experiment with my old speakers from my DVD HTIB. They are 6ohm 100watt speakers that are a little bigger and wooden. OMG! the difference was astounding! I wanted to post this review just to let everyone know to grab a pair of your old stereo speakers and watch this baby soar.

The Ipod connection was a little disappointing. I plugged my itouch and iphone in (works with airplane mode). The sound was fine, but nothing really translated onto the screen. It just let you advance, play and stop from the remote. In the end I still would control it from the ipod. The only difference from the line in jack is the few remote buttons and it charges while the system is on. Panasonic does a much better job with this. Maybe a firmware upgrade will change this. Also if your system is stuck in muting when you plug ipod in, a reboot fixes it. I found this online.

Finally, with Internet connectivity you would think they could integrate Netflix and Pandora. But not yet. I am hoping a firmware upgrade will add them.

All in all, as a Blu Ray home theater in a box it is superb. I set it up with HDMI and Optical connections all around and it paid off. But I would have given it a 4.5 or 5 if the front speakers hadn't been so weak out of the box. But not a deal breaker as cheap bigger speakers really added the oomph it was missing.

Philips BDP5012/F7 Blue-ray Disc Player

Philips BDP5012/F7 Blue-ray Disc Player Review

I have looked for a player that plays both Blu-Ray and DVD discs well, since I have read that some Blu-Ray players may play either DVD or Blu-Ray discs well but not both. Since I own a DVD collection, I wanted to make sure that a player I would get plays both with good quality. This unit does not skimp on the quality of DVD playback for Blu-Ray or vice-versa. I am satisfied with this unit's performance. Also, the included 6 foot HDMI cable is really nice, since I needed one to connect this to my HDTV. It comes with a composite cable in case you want to play discs to a standard definition television as well. Connectors on the back include HDMI, Component, Composite, and speaker connections.

Multi Region/Region Free version of the Panasonic DMP-BD30 features state-of-the-art technologies for superb picture and sound quality with high-definition Blu-ray Discs. Product DescriptionBlu-ray means incredible full-HD images, breathtaking sound and 5x the data capacity of DVDs. Now Blu-ray means something else too: an entirely new movie-viewing experience, made possible by Final Standard Profile, which adds features never seen before, like four Picture-in-Picture modes including Enhanced Commentary (from directors and actors), Backstage Pass, Peek Behind the Animation and Audio Mixing. Combining a PHL Reference Chroma Processor with advanced P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing) imaging technology, UniPhier(R) the Precise Digital Video processor reproduces crisp, natural colors that are extremely faithful to the original movie. It does this by up-sampling the color information in decoded video signals, while the super high-speed P4HD up-converts content recorded in 480i/p, 720p or 1080i format to 1080p by correctly generating each pixel according to information drawn from up to 60 surrounding pixels. The image motion of each pixel is then categorized into one of 16 levels, from stationary to super fast. Image quality is further enhanced by Diagonal Processing, which creates smooth, sharp diagonal lines, and 3:2 Pull-Down, which optimizes the processing accordingly for film or video making the images look natural and lifelike. In addition, the DMP-BD30's HDMI output is Deep Color compatible, with 4,096 steps of gradation for even smoother, finer-quality images that meet Hollywood's stringent demands. With Precise Digital Audio, Blu-ray's beautiful images are complemented by exceptionally pure, accurate sound thanks to Dolby(R) TrueHD and DTS-HD(TM). UniPhier(R)'s advanced processing capability decodes these audio signals with high precision and outputs them in bitstream form with no degradation.

Denon DBP2010 Blu-ray/DVD/CD Player (Black)

Denon DBP2010 Blu-ray/DVD/CD Player (Black) Review

If you're looking for a Blu-ray player packed with networking and internet streaming features, or one that loads discs blindingly fast, then move along. But if you're a reasonably patient person and are looking for high performance audio and video, then you'll find a lot to like in the Denon DBP-2010CI.

Blu-ray Disc has "come a long way, baby." Gone are the ultra-long wait times, poor SD upconversion, frequent disc compatibility issues and lack of internet connectivity that plagued the first and second generation players. Denon's DBP-2010CI features excellent audio and video performance, including solid DVD upconversion, Bonus View and BD-Live capabilities and stable performance with even the most recent cutting edge BD Java-based Blu-ray Disc titles. By the way, as you may have seen in earlier reviews, the Denon player was previously plagued with the "random Blu-ray freeze" issue that also affected Panasonic's 2009 players (which share many parts with the Denon) but this issue was fixed in both the Panasonic and Denon players in separate firmware upgrades delivered last year. If you buy one, you should update the firmware to make sure you have the latest version.

Sure the Denon may not be the fastest player to load discs (in fact, it's one of the slowest of the current players), and it may lack any internet streaming features like Netflix or Pandora, but if those things are not important to you, and the price tag doesn't make you shudder, then you should seriously consider the DBP-2010.

Load times are probably the major annoyance here. Initial boot-up takes about 18 seconds, which isn't too bad. But after that, loading a standard DVD takes another 22 seconds, a standard Blu-ray loads in about 48 seconds and a BD-Java Blu-ray ("Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl") loads in about 60 seconds. Compared to the OPPO BDP-83, the Denon player takes about twice as long to load standard DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, and is about 70% slower loading a BD-Java Blu-ray title.

The player does do well on upconversion and HD deinterlacing torture tests such as the HQV Benchmark DVD and the Spears and Munsil Blu-ray test disc. Its handling of difficult diagonal lines is excellent and its detection of the 3:2 film cadence on DVDs is almost immediate, which prevents the tell-tale moire patterns that can be found on lesser players. 1080i de-interlacing (on 1080i Blu-ray Discs) is also pretty solid wityh just a slight shudder in a film-based 1080i moving test pattern. It's important to note that 1080i represents a fairly small sample of Blu-ray Discs (mostly nature documentaries and concert titles) so it's not too likely you'll notice this shortcoming on most program material. Where the player actually does very well is in noise reduction - it can clean up less-than-stellar Blu-ray and DVD masters without making them look overly processed or removing too much authentic film grain from the image. If you decide you'd prefer to bypass the player's on-board video processing, then simply switch over to "Source Direct" mode which will output DVDs at 480i, and Blu-ray Discs at 1080i or 1080p, allowing an outboard video processor, or the display itself, to do the upconversion and de-interlacing.

In addition to its standard HDMI output (with support for bitstream and PCM), the player also features a set of multi-channel (up to 7.1) analog outputs. These will come in handy if you want to use the player with an older A/V receiver or preamp/processor that lacks HDMI audio decoding. Like most players, the DBP-2010CI allows adjustment of number of channels, gain of each channel, size of each speaker (for bass management) and delay times for each channel. Also, like most players, the subwoofer level can only be decreased (not increased) so you'll want to make sure your receiver has an option to boost the subwoofer level input (10 to 15 dB) if you intend to use the multi-channel analog outputs. We tested these outputs with a number of music-oriented and action-packed Blu-ray titles ("Drum Line," "Hellboy II," "Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds at Radio City") and found that the player offered excellent dynamics and a smooth, balanced sonic presentation.

The player is BD-ROM Profile 2.0-compliant which means it can do BonusView (PiP commentary) and BD-Live Network access, but it has no on-board storage so you'll need to insert an SD card of at least 1 GB in order for BD-Live to work. It also lacks built-in WiFi support so you'll either need a hard-wired network connection or an aftermarket wireless bridge or wireless gaming adapter. Also, as a "Custom Install" product, the rear panel features a standard RS-232C output for integration with an automated home theater system such as a Crestron.

The DBP-2010CI isn't for the casual Blu-ray consumer. The long wait times and lack of internet streaming as well as the relatively high price tag may put these people off. But those who appreciate a finely built and elegant performance piece will value what the DBP-2010CI has to offer.

Our complete review is available at Big Picture Big Sound (dot com).

Panasonic DMP-BD85K WiFi Enabled Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black)

Panasonic DMP-BD85K WiFi Enabled Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black) Review

I bought this locally for a price below Amazon's (sorry Amazon) and was quite impressed with the features and picture quality. My old DVD quit working, and rather than going backwards and buying a SD DVD player, I decided should get Blu-Ray. I still don't have an HD TV yet, but let's face it, some day I will, and I want to be prepared to watch movies in HD. So, I am using the composite video out ( i would use the S Video out, but this unit does not have one) and I must say the video quality is flawless, definitely better than my old Sony DVD player using S-Video. I only bought one Blu-Ray DVD to test the unit and that was Mad Men Season 3, and there is definitely a noticeable difference even when downscaled to the composite output, and the sound is amazingly clear on my home theater, better than the Sony.
The Wireless on this unit is exceptional. I am using WPA2 (AES) with MAC filtering, and this unit connects every time without hesitation, so for those with less wireless security than mine there should be no problems. Sure the network interface is a little bit clunky, and is a little bit sparse at present, but I'm sure Panasonic will improve this as time goes on (and firmware gets upgraded). The Netflix interface is great, much better than watching a movie on your laptop. The picture quality is very good, it varies from movie to movie, but so far and more importantly I have yet to see a movie freeze or break up at all. It just works!
The YouTube interface is quite nice, though some of my playlists are a bit quirky, some of the videos are repeated several times, but not on my computer playlists (which are supposed to mirror each other). I like that I can search for videos from my remote and add them to a playlist or even create a new one from my easy chair. The videos look really good for YouTube videos, and depending on the source sound good too. I was watching music videos and it looked like it was on VH1 or whatever station plays music these days. If you use Picasa you can view your web albums on your TV and boy do they look amazing! The only annoying thing is when you are in slide show mode this acoustic guitar music appears out of nowhere and I see no options to shut it off. Maybe there is a feature in Picasa itself I overlooked. You can also search for pictures to view that other have uploaded for public view. I had fun looking at other people's pictures from the 50's and 60's, great to see what life was like at another time.
There is also an Amazon On Demand feature which I have not tried, since I pay for Netflix I see no need to pay for other movies through this service.
This unit also displays weather and Bloomberg market info which is great if you just want to take a quick look, though you can look up stock info and finance headlines as well.
If you have DIVX movies this unit can handle them as well, and they look wonderful, the machine can also decode DIVX HD formats (which I have none of) but is good to know for the future. Oh, and of course it plays standard DVDs and CDs as well, and they also sound very good.

JVC Home JVC XVBP1 Blu-ray Disc Player

JVC Home JVC XVBP1 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I rarely review, but I do feel like I should for this Blu-Ray player. Bottom line: up-scaling is so good that you do not need to rent Blu-Rays. I am somewhat of an audiophile, and overall I feel like I have good eye for differences in video, and so I have seen enough at this point to realize that I almost cannot tell the difference on this unit between regular DVD and Blu-Ray. The DTS sound that comes through my Marantz may be a little more accurate, but for 90% of us this is unnoticeable. I have decided to not pay more to rent Blu-Ray titles. For purchasing, which I do very little of, I may go the extra little expense, but overall I am am stunned by the up-scaling. Simply put, recent titles in DVD format look as good as the Blu-Ray versions.

Common issues I have read with Blu-Ray players is loading time, response time, and memorization of stop points. This player is as good as any high end DVD player, which have shown to be very speedy and accurate with last viewing point. Blu-Rays by nature load more slowly, but with this unit they are still reasonably fast.

Nice remote, intuitive controls. This thing has not frozen on me yet, has a nice easy to use main page, I can insert my USB stick and play music or look at photos and videos very quickly... great purchase. I paid 0 right before Christmas here on Amazon, but I would pay 0 for it if I had to. Do not hesitate.

The new JVC XV-BP1 is a truly versatile high definition player, offering playback of high definition Blu-ray discs, plus playback of the AVCHD format, the high definition format widely used for HD camcorders, including the JVC HD Everio line. Among the many features of the new JVC XV-BP1 Blu-ray player, to be available in March, is BD Live (Profile ver. 2.0) compatibility when used with USB memory. With BD Live compatibility the player can be connected to the Internet to access BD Live 2.0 features, including easy firmware updates, new movie trailers, updated subtitles, online shopping, chat and gaming. LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player Review

This machine has worked well for us, in particular, the Netflix streaming is very well implemented. The software seems to be very reliable, and it goes and finds it's own updates too. Sound and video from Blue Ray titles is excellent.

On the not so great side, DVD-A (DVD Audio) is a hit or miss proposition with the machine, and CD sound is poor unless you use the Digital Out connection and run it through a high quality DAC. Also, upsampled video is very good with DVD's that do not have the newest copy protection on them. The new "super" protected disks confound the machine's ability to up-sample video to 1080p.

Still, at the current price for the machine, it is a very good bargain, and will work well for most people.

-Paul

LG BD590 250GB HD Network Blu-Ray Disc Player

LG BD590 250GB HD Network Blu-Ray Disc Player Review

Little background on me: I owned or have owned a BH100, BH200, BD300, BD370 and BD390. So pretty much every LG Blu-ray player except the 270.

Pros:
Fast - I noticed DVD and Blu-ray loaded just a wee bit faster than my LG BD390. The difference wasn't amazing, but maybe a few seconds.

VuDu, Netflix, Pandora etc - They work just as they should. VuDu is identical to that on the BD390, but Netflix is the new version that allows you to view new movies/TV to Instant, has Genres, collections etc. No, it's not EVERYTHING that [...] offers, but you probably have a rotating selection of 300 different programs to check out if you don't feel like breaking out the laptop.

GracieNotes - Wow. Freakin' awesome. I managed to pull song information from a DVD, BD and a 'movie' file. As an added bonus; Hit the Display button while watching something (I assume DVD/BD only) and at the very bottom is 'Movie Information'. Click it and it will tell you what you are watching (small picture), synopsis, actor names etc. Woah!

250GB HD - Big selling point and works well. You are able to copy directly from an external HD/USB to the intern HD or via WiFi. Your choice. Obviously a wired copy will be faster than WiFi, so I set mine to copy 100GB from my external HD and went to bed. Woke up, and watched some stuff. Works very well and was fast. Maybe it can be upgraded? Out of the box it had 246GB out of 250GB available. So everything else is stored on internal memory. I bet this can be upped...

WiFi - Faster. Before, VuDu was a bit choppy, but now it was perfect.

DNLA - Works fine on my MacBook (some had issues?)

Cons:
Pandora - Ok, it's great to finally get this, but why can't I assume the colored buttons to be an easy Thumb Up, zzzz, Thumbs Down, Bookmark? Seems like it would be much easier, but the colored buttons do other things in Pandora. Feels like a wasted opportunity.

Music on HD - Well, it won't play iTunes DMR files or ones in m4a format (iTunes automatically converts them this way when you rip from CD unless you tell it not to). I spent 2 hours converting everything in my library to .mp3 so I could import them. Funny thing is, it actually imports the folder name, but none of the tracks. Took me a while to figure out why it skipped several CDs (I did 10 right away).

Size - Why is this bigger? I get it has a 250GB HD inside, but those are the size of an iPhone and the back of the units reeks of being a Gen2 unit and not a Gen5 version.

Menu - Sigh. All of the online stuff is in the Netcast icon, which means you have to click it, wait for it to load, and then you get presented with Netflix, VuDu etc. An extra step, but c'mon, there is a ton of room on that menu screen. Which is now redesigned to look like animated Ice Cubes in a pool. Odd choice...

Picture Settings - Remember how the BD390 could allow you to add/remove Edge Enhancement, DNR etc. That's gone. I even tried using my BD390 remote and the player didn't do anything. WTF? This is the top of the line player (out of 3 now!) and this was removed? Update: FIXED! The Picture Setting Menu is now found when you hit 'Display' during a movie. There are as many options as the BD390, but its better than none.

USB - Really, under a trap door? I get that some people may not want to pull their gear out to plug in a USB dogle, but get a extension. Thankfully, with the Internal HD, I'll never use it.

Meh:
Remote - I don't hate it...but I like the BD590. I'll never use the numbers, so I would prefer them to be hidden in a trap door so I would have less to look at. The Center and arrow keys do feel better, and the Power button is HUGE compared to the identical sized Power/Eject of the previous. The Play/Pause/Skip are clear white...not sure why. They don't glow. So confused.

DVD Upconversion - Looks about the same.

Sylvania NB500SL9 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player with HDMI Cable

Sylvania NB500SL9 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player with HDMI Cable Review

Like the Magnavox, and Insignia brands, the Sylvania NB500SL9 is made by Funai, who incidently makes 50% of the DVD players sold in North America. The thing with Funai is, you can buy the same model number of any of their brands, and depending on when, where, and how it was made, get a different unit. The reason for this is that Funai, like many manufacturers, usually makes the initial offering with the best parts, ie, power supplies, DAC audio, video processors, boards and chipsets, etc.., usually for the first 3 to 4 months of production. Then, as the need to be more competitive in the market comes into play, different (I'm assumming mostly cheaper) parts MAY go in the units. This can also happen if they run out of a certain part, or change suppilers (pretty common actually) in the middle of a production run, or just simply need to make them cheaper. Funai has also gone the other way, and updated some of the newer produced NB500SL9 units, as my unit loads faster than the same (model number) unit a friend of mine has, which he bought 6 months before I did. When you get a good unit, as I apparently did a few months ago on Amazon for 0, they work great and perform well. Other times, you may get one with cheaper, or just slightly different parts, and the result may be less satisfying. There's no way to know for sure, but the mojority of reviewers here have liked this unit, and overall, it is a good value when bought for 0 or less.

Sylvania NB500SL9 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player with HDMI Cable Feature

  • 1.1 Profile for PNP with Sound

Samsung BD-C6500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Samsung BD-C6500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I have owned this player for the last 3 weeks, and i love this player. Network set up, Netflix, Pandora, Blockbuster set up was easy. The DVD's plays great in this player. Watched 2 Blu ray movies so far and the experience has been good so far. When i hit stop it does not resume again from the point where you stopped for Blu ray, i have read some forums online and i found that most of Blu ray discs do not support resume functionality. This resume functionality works on all DVD's.

I am using 7.1 analog out put to connect to my Old Non-HDMI receiver and the experience and set up was very easy.

What i dont like:
This player does not have speaker setup. The only thing you can specify is the speaker size and subwoofer. You cannot set the sound or distance of the speakers in this player.
Some samsung apps are horrible. There is an accu weather app for weather, and when i try to change the region to my area it just freezes and i have to shut down my whole system. I think samsung should test the apps before they allow it to be used.
Sometimes the player freezes when trying to access blockbuster, but works most of the times and requires restart if it freezes.

Over all i like this player and would recommend it.

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD, DVD-Audio, and VRS Technology

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player with SACD, DVD-Audio, and VRS Technology Review

From all the other reviews, it's apparent the quaility of the video and audio are superb. No other comes close to the dvd upconverting, and the audio is something that has to be heard to be believed. I want to talk about customer service. About a week after I rewatched (is that a word?) all my favorite movies. I was checking for firmware updates, and realized I wasn't getting connected to the internet. I emailed Oppo about the problem, and literally 5 minutes later I got a reply. Going back and forth trying to troubleshoot the problem, the nic card is the problem. Oppo says to return it to Amazon for a exchange. So far, 5 stars to Oppo for customer service I haven't exprienced in years. It's refreshing to know it still out there. But wait, now dreading to have to pack up the player and all the cables to send back to Amazon, I call them for a RMA. Amazon says, We will send you a new one, when it arrives put the return player in the box and we will email you a shipping label and give it back to the ups driver. OMG, did I die and go to customer service heaven? Could this be a sign? Either way, Oppo and Amazon are on my very very short list of company's I will return to again.

Sony BDP-S370 Blu-ray Disc Player

Sony BDP-S370 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I already own a Sony BDPS-360 downstairs as our main Blu-Ray player, but wanted a streaming player for upstairs (an Xbox360 takes care of that downstairs). Since I won't have a 3D TV for quite some time, and have wired ethernet running to the appropriate room, the 470/570 offer me nothing over this player, so I bought the 370.

Blu-Rays are very quick to load. Checked out Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and the biggest delay in getting to the movie was skipping the previews up front. Menu was up in just a few seconds, and the movie launched very quickly after that. Maybe 30 seconds from putting the disc in until I was watching the movie.

The remote does have an Open/Close button on it. That was not a big deal for me with the 360, but others complained about it so I thought I'd mention it.

Streaming takes a bit of setup, with the biggest item of note being that you need to register your Blu-Ray on internet.sony.tv before activating the streaming features. I had fits trying to create an account directly on that site, but creating a SonyStyle account first and then activating here worked much better. This works similar to Netflix activation in that you get a 4 symbol code from the player, enter it into your account, and now the Blu-Ray is activated. I then needed to go through the typical Netflix activation, getting another code from the player and entering it into my Netflix account. Amazon VOD linked directly to the Sony account and was then available on the player. Instructions for each of these are included in the screens on the Blu-Ray player, where it will provide the codes and the website address, and you then go the computer and finish linking from there.

Netflix works only off your Instant Queue, so you need to add movies to that queue on the website (or from the Xbox360 or other device with a full browser). Amazon VOD seems to have a fairly complete browser included. Netflix HD quality was reasonable, but most importantly about what I get on the computer or Xbox360; the player does not interfere in any way. This player was my first experience with Amazon VOD, and I must say the Sample HD clip (Superman Returns) was a lot higher than I expected, and actually better than most OnDemand offerings I get from my cable company (TWC NC).

So for Blu-Ray playback and Internet streaming, the box does a really good job. I wish the Netflix interface was more robust like the videogame consoles have, but actual playback and access to the Instant Queue works fine.

The big disappointment, and the one that keeps it from getting 5 stars, is that the SonyStyle page for the player lists DLNA as a feature. This is the standard for letting media devices connect to your computer and stream video / pictures / music over the network. Services like PlayOn also support this. DLNA, however, is not actually active on the player. From checking other sites, no one knows yet if this will be available in a future firmware update, or if the site is incorrect. If DLNA support is critical to your decision making, you may want to hold off until there is some answer on the DLNA picture.

Aside from that, I'm really happy with it as Blu-Ray player and Netflix/Amazon VOD streamer.

I have not yet tried a standard DVD, or any of the music streaming services. I'll update this review if anything changes as I use the player more.

UPDATE MARCH 1, 2010: Sony has updated the product page and changed the footnote for DLNA support. It is now due in a July 2010 firmware update. That's good news, and once the firmware ships I'll try to remember to report back on how well it works. If it works well the review will probably bump to 5 stars, as this is a pretty full-featured, fast, stable Blu-Ray player for under 0, especially if like me wireless and 3D are just not important to you.

One other bit of info for those who buy the player: if you have a Vizio TV, the remote code to use appears to be "04". It's not in the manual, but I tried this after a web search revealed others using the code for other Sony remotes, and this works for turning the TV on and off and changing the volume. The INPUT button does not work for me, though. The manual also seems to be missing the instructions for changing the TV code, but thanks to the manual for the S360 I have downstairs, the instructions are to hold the TV power button on the remote, enter the code, then release the TV power button on the remote.

Panasonic DMP-BD10AK 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Panasonic DMP-BD10AK 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

The Panasonic DMP-BD10A is a high quality Blu-Ray player. Start up times (once the power button is hit to time disk tray will come out)are as fast as my upconvert DVD player...Much faster than the Sony BDP-S300 I use to own. Also the play times (time from when disk is put into player and see disk contents on the TV) are also just as fast as my upconvert DVD player. Picture quality is out of this world! Cannot comment on audio since I'm still using the speakers on my LCD. I wish I would have bought this player instead of my Sony Blu-ray to begin with. Panasonic certainly put a lot of thought and quality into this machine. My only gripe is the remote could have been better laid out, but really no big deal. Some have complained about the flip-down front panel, but I personally like it b/c it hides all the unsightly buttons one typically sees on Blu-ray players. The panel gives this player a handsome appearance. I highly recommend this Panasonic Blu-ray player!!

Panasonic DMP-BD10AK 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Feature

  • Blu-ray Player
  • Advanced Pixel Processor
  • HDMI 1080P upconvert for all DVD
  • 7.1 Channel Audio, with Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS-HD, and DTS decoding (but not DTS-HD Master Audio Lossless)

Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I've been using this Blu-Ray player now for over a year. When I first bought it I thought I would do more Netflix streaming than anything else with it. Setup was easy. There were a lot of firmware releases at first, seemed that every week there was a new one. They took a while to download and install.

I've found that I use the Pandora music feature more than anything else. It's easy to use and very high quality. The internal scaling chip makes all video look fantastic. As a result I opted to not pay extra for Blu-Ray movies from Netflix anymore because the regular DVD upscaling is so good.

It's a shame they discontinued this model, not a single problem.

Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Feature

  • Built-in decoders for next-generation Dolby Digital Plus and lossless Dolby TrueHD (7.1-channel)
  • Plays BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE discs; backward compatible with DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-ROM, CD and CD-R/RW discs.
  • Built-in Ethernet and USB 2.0 ports for network connection and firmware upgrades.
  • 10-bit/108MHz video digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion. 24-bit/192kHz audio digital-to-analog (D/A)converter.
  • Outputs: 1 component video, 1 composite video, 1 HDMI, 1 stereo audio, 1 optical digital audio. Includes remote with batteries and A/V cable

Samsung BD-P2550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Overview

Experience thrilling high-definition from Blu-ray Discs and even convert your standard DVDs to high-definition with this 1080p Blu-ray disc player. Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I formerly owned a Sony BDP s300 for over a year but after reading the many excellent reviews on this unit from CNET and Home Theater, I decided to sell my Sony and cop this fine unit. So far there's been no problem playing discs, BD or Standard, and in fact it does boot up a little faster than the Sony but where it stands out in is the sound quality and picture. I was amazed at the rich sound of this unit when I played "Amadeus-the Director's Cut" in BD on this machine. So far I have not regretted my decision on this purchase. And at just under 0--it's a steal!! One more thing to add that the Sony didn't have, this machine has a memory if you stop it and shut it off---when you turn it back on, it'll go back to where you left off---no bookmarks needed here!!

Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Feature

  • Final Standard Profile Blu-ray Player (BD-ROM Profile1 version 1.1)
  • 1080p output: 24p/60p via HDMI v1.3 with Deep Color
  • Up-conversion of standard DVDs to 1080p Playback
  • Dolby True HD Decoder, DTS/DTS-HD High Resolution/Master Audio Decoder
  • Pixel Precision Progressive Progressing for HD

Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Overview

Blu-ray means incredible full-HD images, breathtaking sound and 5x the data capacity of DVDs. Combining a PHL Reference Chroma Processor with advanced P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing) imaging technology, UniPhier(R) — the Precise Digital Video processor — reproduces crisp, natural colors that are extremely faithful to the original movie. In addition, the DMP-BD30's HDMI output is Deep Color compatible, with 4,096 steps of gradation for even smoother, finer-quality images that meet Hollywood's stringent demands, so you can experience movies just the way they were meant to be experienced. It also brings re-mastering to Blu-ray for the first time, which compensates for data lost during the compression process creating a fuller, richer sound.

Sony BDP-BX2 Full HD 1080P Blu-Ray DVD Disc Player HDMI

Sony BDP-BX2 Full HD 1080P Blu-Ray DVD Disc Player HDMI Review

This is my first blu ray player and it works great. Blu ray discs look great on it (I've been testing it out with season 5 of LOST). The player itself looks really slick. The load times for blu rays are pretty quick too. Something you may not be able to tell from the picture: when a blu ray disc is playing, the faint light at the top center of the front is blue, when a dvd is playing, it's white.

Note: as other reviewers have said, this player does not have advanced internet features like streaming Netflix. This is a non-issue for me, as I have other devices with those capabilities. Some people have also complained that the remote has no eject button... Who cares?... If I need to eject a disc I'm going to need to get off the couch and walk up to the player to take it out anyways...

If you want a simple, slick looking, inexpensive player, go with this one.

LG BD570 Network Blu-Ray Disc Player

LG BD570 Network Blu-Ray Disc Player Review

I have been waiting for this to come out for a few weeks now (seems like longer). I am tired of using stereo cables and s-video to connect my laptop to my TV every time I want to watch something from my computer. I looked for other "home media server" options originally, and ultimately found a Samsung product similar to this one. It seemed great at first, but after reading some reviews I was skeptical. Then, C-NET reported the imminent release of the LG BD750, which they saw at the 2010 CES.

The best features in my opinion, aside from the fact that it plays Blu-ray discs, is that it can stream Netflix right out of the box and also stream media from your networked computers. I set up the BD570 last night and played around with it a little. DVD playback seemed fine. Setting up the Wi-Fi connection wasn't too difficult, either. It would have been much easier if our Wi-Fi SSID were being broadcast. Also, toggling to upper case letters on the on-screen keyboard for SSID/password input wasn't immediately obvious. The built-in Wi-Fi is a definite plus, though; the Samsung I was looking at came with a Wi-Fi dongle that you had to plug in via USB and set up (seems like Wi-Fi was an afterthought). If your modem or router/access point is located close enough to your entertainment center, you could even connect the LG via Ethernet for even better streaming throughput.

Setting up Netflix was a cinch. They provide you with an activation code; you log into your Netflix account on your computer and type in the code, and presto. You can then browse through your Instant Queue, or browse by category, etc. (Other products with similar features, don't let you watch un-queued movies. That is, you have to add them manually on your computer before they appear on your TV queue.) The quality seemed pretty decent--perhaps slightly more pixelated than hooking up my laptop Netflix stream to the TV via s-video. This might just be a matter of tweaking aspect ratio settings on the TV and/or BD player. Also, the movie cover art seemed a bit slow in loading while browsing through titles, but no biggie.

Streaming shared media on network computers via LG's Home Link feature works great, but it took a bit of tweaking to get it set up. A couple of different shared items appeared immediately when I loaded Home Link. One was labeled "COMPUTERNAME/Username" and the other was a directory of all shared documents. The former was some form of "media server" protocol, which I couldn't get to work (I tried enabling media streaming in Windows 7 settings, to no avail). The latter directory tree, once opened, showed all empty folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Downloads--i.e., all "My Documents" sub-folders, but all empty). I had "Homegroup" sharing enabled for a number of different folders in Windows 7 settings, but Home Link couldn't access their contents until I added "Guest" as a user in the Share settings for specific folders. Once that was done, I was instantly able to browse and stream movies, music, and pictures. I tested a couple of DivX and MP3 files, and they seemed to run great.

All of this file-sharing trouble may be my unfamiliarity with the new Windows 7 networking lingo and how to configure settings properly without sharing everything with the world. Others may find it much easier to connect and stream media. Also, bundled with the LG player is a disc containing some Nero software called Home Essentials, I believe. It's a way to share files over a network using DLNA. I'm not sure how it works, or whether it's any good, but now that I've got Windows networking figured out, I might leave good enough alone.

Overall, my impression of the BD570 is very positive. The only reason I've given this only 4 stars is the slightly cumbersome nature of the setup process for home networking, and because some of the language used in the menus is not 100% clear (not overly technical, just poor English). We have had very good experiences with LG products--bought an LG fridge, washer, and dryer in the past 6 months or so--and I'm so far pretty pleased with this new addition. As the first to review the product, at least on here, I hope people will find my experience and remarks useful.

One final caveat: I have not tested any of the other Internet-enabled functions, such as Pandora, YouTube, etc. If they're anything like the Netflix function, then they should be easy to set up and use.

Marantz BD7003 Blu-ray Player

Marantz BD7003 Blu-ray Player Review

The BD7003 is a Blu-ray player for the performance minded video/audio enthusiast. The unit also may not be for those still using older receivers/processors, it has no onboard decoding or multi-channel analog outputs. To clarify the 7003 will work with older receivers with either optical or coaxial digital audio inputs you just won't be able to take advantage of the HD audio formats which are as large of an improvement in audio as HD is to video. See more on this later.

Let's get the bad out of the way, picture quality would have easily scored a five, as well as looks and ease of use, though I found the manual some what confusing, but what made me have to give the 7003 a four is lack of features in a player at this price, the unit is still slow loading discs, skipping chapters, and the disc drive is loud. I can hear the disc drive during loading making those grinding sounds with the entertainment center door closed and me on my sofa about 11 to 12 feet away.

My previous BD player was the Samsung BD-P1200 which got excellent picture quality reviews due to the Silicon Optics video chip set. I began to look for a replacement when the unit showed some disc incompatibility and would not bitstream the HD audio formats. I was a bit worried about being able to find a player with the picture performance of the 1200. I also borrowed my daughter's Samsung BD-P1500 for a while since it did bitstream. I had an opportunity to audition a BD-7003 in my home. While I was hesitant based on price and features I brought one home any way to see how it did with my Marantz AV8003.

First off let me say that all Blu-ray pictures are NOT the same. I found this out when putting the 1500 in place of my 1200, the picture quality of the 1500 was not as good. It was also evident when I put the 7003 in place. The BD-7003 has a stunningly good picture both HD and standard DVD. To my surprise the 7003's picture was more vibrant and vivid than the 1200. The 7003 gave the blackest blacks I've ever seen and images seemed sharper with more background detail. I was also please to see that the increase in sharpness and vivid picture held true on standard DVD as well. With the 7003 fine detail was easier to see. I was able to make out detail in eyes I've never seen before. On one movie some torches were burning and the shades of color in the flames made them look very real. I am very impressed with the picture quality performance of the BD-7003.

I like the remote, it is comfortable to hold and the main buttons are logically laid out at the bottom. You have your <, stop, play, > sort of arched with the Pause below them centered. Above that is skip chapter forward and back, the buttons are a different shape. Not far above that is the cross pad and enter. Above that are buttons you probably wont' use much. Set up was easy, the On Screen Display showed a chart similar to what you see in the manual. I think I changed one setting for audio and off I was. The remote shouldn't give anyone a problem in the dark. The 7003 has the only remote I've ever seen with a separate button for power on and off.

A feature well worth mentioning and greatly missed on most Blu-ray players is the Memory Stop. If any interruptions where I have to Pause or Stop the movie just hit Play on the BD-7003 and I can pick up where I left off. Before if I Paused too long or hit Stop on accident I had to go through the movie looking for the closest point where I left off.

The 7003 does have Bonus View for picture in a picture or seeing special features on the disc if this is your thing. It also has Zoom and Angle to play with. The 7003 also was able to play a Blu-ray disc that would not play in either of the Samsung players. And my 1200 was up to date on firmware.

In order to take advantage of HD audio sound, Dolby Tru-HD and DTS-MA, you will need a receiver or preamp with the decoders built in as the BD-7003 does not have them. It should also be noted that these HD audio formats are only accessible with HDMI connections as optical or coaxial digital connections are not compatible, from any unit, period. Bitstreaming these HD audio tracks to my AV8003 worked very well and sound quality was incredible. One thing to note is the manual does not mention DTS-MA but Marantz's website says the BD-7003 will bitstream it and in fact it does. After a short panic attack I was all better after dropping a disc in with DTS-MA and seeing the DTS Master Audio flash on the front of my processor.

To sort of sum things up, despite the short comings I mentioned, I love this player and highly recommend it if it fits into your system as it did mine. I would encourage anyone looking for a Blu-ray player to see the picture quality of this unit. It would be painful but after using the BD-7003 I probably would have paid the original retail of 9.00 but at 9.00 it's in line with most of the premium name brands.

Side notes:

1. I wondered why new Blu-ray players, even those that haven't hit the street yet, are coming out with only version 1.1 and no internet connectivity. The reason, theory, I found is the circuitry for internet connectivity can degrade performance of the unit. I've seen no white papers or tests but I did see the theory in print. Take it for what it's worth.

2. There are 3 levels of digital audio, one being what we are used to on standard DVD which is compressed to save space on the disc, two is a slightly higher bit rate available on Blu-ray via optical or coaxial digital connection referred to as "Dolby Plus" or "DTS-HD", third is lossless or true to the original movie soundtrack master formats called Dolby Tru-HD or DTS-MA (Master Audio). To take advantage of the 3rd level the signal has to be passed via HDMI to your receiver, the decoding can happen in the player and be sent LPCM. Or bitstreamed to be decoded internally by a receiver or processor with the decoders. You can also use Multi-channel analog connections if included on your Blu-ray player with built in decoding for the HD formats and have a compatible receiver with these inputs. One note about Multi-channel analog or LPCM where using the Blu-ray decoder, the player will need to also include several different speaker set up features as on a HT receiver in order for sound to be properly balanced and set. This is another problem I had with the BD-P1200, it only gave me adjustment for speaker size, large or small, no volume level, no crossovers, no delay etc. So while the sound of the HD audio was good it was also untamed.

For more information on the various formats the Dolby Labs and DTS websites are good resources and even have speaker placement diagrams.
