LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I am really happy with the LG BD390. I was originally using a PS3 as my blu ray player but felt it was lacking audio quality with regular audio CDs, the fan was too loud during normal playback, and the picture would stutter intermittently when trying to process action scenes in a movie. Not a lot of reasons to go out purchase a standalone player, but I'm glad I did.

I paired the unit with my wireless network, updated the BD390, activated my netflix account, and tweaked some of the settings in about 20-25 minutes. Setup was extremely smooth. I am very happy with how well the picture looks when streaming Netflix movies. I was originally using the PS3 to stream Netflix through an application called "Playon" and by far the BD390 processes instant movies much better.

When setting up the audio, if you choose "Primary Pass through" for both SPDIF and HDMI settings, the player will take the surround sound format and send it directly to your receiver. I decided to use the HDMI cable versus the fiber optics cable for the audio output for the following reason.

When you use a fiber optic cable connected to the "Digital audio out" you lose a lot of the available surround sound formats. For example, if you use "Digital audio out" and a bluray is recorded in Dolby TruHD, it will be outputted as just Dolby Digital. Now if you use the HDMI cable plugged into the "HDMI out" and a bluray is recorded in Dolby TruHD, it will be outputted as Dolby TruHD. The player will only send the Dolby TruHD and Dolby Plus formats through HDMI.

I have read some reviews where there was some confusion that the LB BD370 should be the same as the BD390 in picture quality. This is not true based on the Digital/Analog Conversion of the players.

The LG BD370 has 108MHz/10bit in Video and 192 kHz / 24 bit for audio.
The LG BD390 has 148MHz/12bit in Video and 192 kHz / 24 bit for audio.

For half the price, the LGBD390 actually has the same conversion as the high end OPPO BD83 which is also 148MHz/12-bit in video and 192 kHz / 24 bits for audio. Overall I am very pleased with the features of the LG BD390.

LG BH200 Super Blu Blu-Ray HD DVD Combo Player

LG BH200 Super Blu Blu-Ray HD DVD Combo Player Review

I got this unit when the HDDVD vs Blu-ray war just finished. Reason I did was because I knew I was about to find some HD-DVD's for REAL cheap now. You can still get awesome deals ( and up) if you shop around and still get that great picture quality. So this player offers up conversion on DVDs, HDDVD and Blu-ray all in one??? NO BRAINIER! Now something new to the mix now is that now you have to periodically UPDATE your firmware. What does that mean? You are upgrading the software the unit is using, much like updating the software in you computer to run the newer stuff. Now some players make this easy to do (via USB port) and others make it hard (Ethernet port only). Fortunately this unit falls under the easy category. Go to the web site http://us.lgservice.com and get the newest firmware, save it on your USB portable card and plug it into the front port, follow updating instructions as provided on the web page with the updates and you are golden. These firmware updates are KEY TO HAVE A ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE watching these blu-rays as they fix sound/picture/compatibility issues that occur every time they add more features to these blu-rays (Blu-ray Live and U-control are the biggest offenders of BLu-ray player lock ups out these). Bottom Line is I have been VERY happy with the unit and the recent upgrade to the firmware addressed alot of the issues plaging the unit. The price is steep but look at it this way, it is almost 0-0 for a new blu-ray player, yes HDDVD is dead but there are thousands of those movies out these for BARGIN prices and they ARE HD format, enjoy the benifits of them loosing the war!!! and then the up converter of your DVDs. I also recommend if you have any questions or need help with any feature of this unit check out the web page: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1009104

Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-ray Disc Player

Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-ray Disc Player Review

I purchased this deck from Amazon at 5.00 new, along with the Onkyo 706 receiver. The deck performs without any issues right out of the box. Startup and disk loading times are reasonable...a bit longer than a normal DVD player, but much faster than my original Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player. I downloaded a firmware update and burned it to disk, then installed it without problems. The on-screen menus are intuitive and well laid-out. At the price I paid - I can recommend it without reservation. At the new price - I would do a bit more research, but after the first couple of months of use with 18 or so different Blu-Ray disks, there have been no problems, and Panasonic products are typically reliable and long lasting.

Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-ray Disc Player Specifications

Amazon.com Product Description Panasonic's two new slim, BD-Live compatible, feature-filled Blu-ray players, the DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55, offer cutting edge technologies focused on producing the ultimate movie-viewing experience.

front viewThe BD35 and BD55 both feature an HD Audio Decoder (Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTSTM-HD Master Audio Essential), delivering 7.1-channel surround sound through a 7.1-channel receiver equipped with an HDMI terminal. The DMP-BD55 features high-end audio components and can also output analog signals for 7.1-channel sound, so even receivers that are not compatible with HDMI can produce the newest 7.1-channel surround sound.

Both models are equipped with an SD Memory Card slot that makes it easy to transfer images from an HD camcorder or digital still camera that uses SD Memory Cards and are compatible with Panasonic’s VIERA Link function so they can be operated by the VIERA HDTV remote control.

The combination of a Panasonic Blu-ray player, Home Theater audio system and a VIERA HDTV converts the home entertainment experience into a true-to-life cinematic experience. Consumers can now view and enjoy movies the way the film maker intended -- in stunning High Definition video and audio – right from the comfort of their own home.

True-To-Life Colors

The PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus video processor was developed after more than 15 years of collaboration between Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory and professional cinema studios in Hollywood. With PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus, users viewing content on Blu-ray Discs enjoy crisp, vivid colors that are extremely close to the original. A high-precision 4:4:4 function creates video signals in which each pixel of the signal from the Blu-ray Disc is color-compensated, so when the player is connected to a Panasonic VIERA HDTV, the colors are even sharper and more vivid.

UniPhier System

UniPhier is a Panasonic-created system LSI developed by applying 45-nanometer processing to a consumer product – a world’s first. This single-chip integration technology also contributes greatly to the BD35’s world's slimmest height of 49mm.

Blu-ray Video Features

More Picture

1080p compared to 480iSee Everything Your HDTV Can Show You with Full HD.

6 Times the Picture Data on DVDs
See everything your HDTV can show you. Blu-ray Disc's Full HD 1080p resolution produces over 2 million pixels per frame to produce a razor-sharp picture with unmatched depth and clarity that takes full advantage of the capabilities of today's 1080p HDTVs. That's six times the picture data contained on DVDs, which are encoded at only 480p.

24p True Cinema Video Output
Most of all Hollywood movies are shot at 24 frames per second, and Blu-ray Disc movies are mastered at 24 frame per second. Blu-ray Disc Players can output films at 1080/24p for a true film-like experience at home, as well as 1080/60p for more traditional HDTV sets on the market.

Backwards compatible and Upscaling
All existing Blu-ray Disc players will play your standard DVD collection without a problem. And with built-in 1080p video upscaling, they'll look even better.

More Space
Blu-ray Disc has 5x more storage capacity than DVD, which allows more content to fit on the disc. The extra storage capacity also means more room for special features like inline navigation, Bonus View, interactive games, deleted scenes, director commentary and more
Navigate to special features, other scenes, or settings without leaving the content you are watching.
in movie navigation
Bonus View lets you watch special features and commentary inline without leaving the movie.

More Bits

more bitsIn the digital world, picture quality is not just about resolution, but also about bit rates. The higher the bit rate, the more data that is processed, typically resulting in higher video quality. DVDs have a maximum video bit rate of about 10 megabits per second (Mbps). In comparison, Blu-ray Disc is capable of video bitrates up to an incredible 40 Mbps. The bottom line, higher bit rates allow for the least amount of data compression for HD video that looks closest to the original video source.

BD-Live

BD-Live screenshotBoth the BD35 and BD55 feature BD-Live compatibility which enables users to connect to the Internet to download images, subtitles and other data, and take part in interactive activities and multi-player games linked to bonus cinema content found on Blu-ray Discs.

BD-Live is a Blu-ray feature that enables you to access special content via an internet-connected Blu-ray player. Because it's not coded into the disc, BD-Live content is always updated, always fresh. With BD-Live, your Blu-ray disc is different every time you view it.

Check out the latest previews, download special scenes, exclusive features and ringtones, and participate in online communities or games.

As BD-Live continues to grow and expand, even more features will become available, customizing features and content to your location or preferences.

Life-Like Surround Sound

The BD35 and BD55 both feature an HD Audio Decoder (Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTSTM-HD Master Audio Essential), which supports the 7.1-channel surround sound newly adopted in Blu-ray Discs. Users can enjoy 7.1-channel surround even with systems that do not support HD Audio -- as long as the DMP-BD35/55 is connected to a 7.1-channel receiver equipped with an HDMI terminal. The DMP-BD55 can also output analog signals for 7.1-channel sound, so even receivers that are not compatible with HDMI can produce the newest 7.1-channel surround sound by simply connecting to the DMP-BD55.

Dolby TrueHD, Dolby’s next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media, delivers tantalizing sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master.

  • Delivers enthralling studio-master-quality sound that unlocks the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs.
  • Offers more discrete channels than ever before for impeccable surround sound.
  • Compatible with the A/V receivers and home-theaters-in-a-box (HTIBs) of today and tomorrow.
  • Dialogue normalization maintains the same volume level when you change to other Dolby Digital and Dolby TrueHD programming.
  • Dynamic range control (Night mode) enables you to customize audio playback to reduce peak volume levels (no loud surprises) while experiencing all the details in the soundtrack, enabling late-night viewing of high-energy surround sound without disturbing others.

The Panasonic BD55 goes a step further with a high-end audio design and components. Thanks to a 192kHz 24bit audio digital-analog converter and high quality insulators, electrolytic capacitors, copper-foil film capacitors and ultra-low-impedance electrolytic capacitors, the DMP-BD55 delivers the same kind of exciting surround effect and lifelike ambience as today's finest cinemas. The DMP-BD55 can also output analog signals for 7.1-channel sound, so even receivers that are not compatible with HDMI can produce the newest 7.1-channel surround sound by simply connecting to the DMP-BD55.

x.v Color

Standard RGB Color Profile

xvYCC Color Range
Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation "xvYCC" color space (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or "x.v. color" for shortactually offers an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize.
  • Next-generation "xvYCC" color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
  • Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
  • Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors

Deep Color
deep color eliminates visible color bandingSo, where x.v. color expands the available range of colors your HDTV can display, Deep Color increases the number of colors your HDTV can display within that range, for smoother transitions from color to color.
  • Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors
  • Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors
  • Enables increased contrast ratio
  • Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white

Connectivity

Both models are equipped with an SD Memory Card slot that makes it easy to transfer images from an HD camcorder or digital still camera that uses SD Memory Cards. Simply insert the SD card into the DMP-BD35/55 and it plays AVCHD-format video images or JPEG stills in full 1920 x 1080 resolution on your flat panel HDTV. The DMP-BD35/55 can also play slide shows, complete with background music.

The DMP-BD35/55 models are also compatible with Panasonic’s VIERA Link function so they can be operated by the VIERA HDTV remote control.

Pioneer BDP-51FD BonusView Blu-ray Player

Pioneer BDP-51FD BonusView Blu-ray Player Review

Pioneer BDP-51FD BonusView Blu-ray Player Overview

The BDP-51FD Bonus View Blu-ray Disc Player provides up to 1920x1080 resolution for an unrivaled picture quality. And with True24FPS, now see your movies as the director intended. One HDMI 1.3a digital connection is all you need from the BDP-51FD to output both HD audio and video signals to your HDMI-capable A/V receiver or HD flat panel. Compared to typical connections, the HDMI interface replaces multiple cords without degradation in signal quality between components. HDMI 1.3a also provides 12-bit deep color support, improving subtle gradations between colors. The BDP-51FD supports HDMI Control, which allows you to seamlessly control all your HDMI Control-equipped Pioneer A/V equipment with a single remote. Each DAC features a signal-to-noise ratio of 117db. Wolfson DACs provide top-notch audio performance from music and movie soundtracks. Utilizing a Pioneer developed IC, this circuit digitally reshapes the waveform of the audio clock to greatly reduce jitter for all content. 3D Noise Reduction based on pixel-per-pixel basis reduces Gaussian Noise without blurring the image. Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player Review

I've never had a single problem with this player. It is a little slow to load but that's not a problem for me at all.. it gives me time to settle down. It works flawlessly and samsung provides free upgrades on their website. I think it's the best player for the price.

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player Feature

  • Plays high-def Blu-Ray discs with 5 times resolution of standard DVDs; measures 16.9 x 3.1 x 12.8 inches (WxHxD)
  • Backwards compatible with current DVD and CD formats; upconverts DVD movie discs to near high-definition
  • Includes 11-in-2 multi-format memory card slot; provides playback of MP3 and high-resolution JPEG files
  • Connections: 1 composite, 1 S-Video, 1 component, 1 HDMI
  • Built-in decoders for Dolby Digital/Digital Plus/DTS; coaxial and optical digital audio outputs

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player Overview

The Samsung BD-P1000 DVD player is the first model from Samsung that plays high-definition Blu-ray Discs, which takes advantage of today's flat-screen HDTVs by playing content at native 720p or 1080i video resolutions. You'll marvel at the clarity and full-color spectrum of the vibrant video produced from Blu-ray movie discs, which provide five times the resolution of standard DVD movie discs. The BD-P1000 also offers backward compatibility for DVD movie and CD audio discs, and an upconverting function that brings your favorite DVDs to near HD quality. It includes one high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output, which provides uncompressed, all-digital video and multi-channel audio delivered via a single cable (720p/1080p). High-definition signals up to 1080i are also available through the component video output. Note that viewing high-definition Blu-ray Disc content requires an HDTV or HD-ready TV.

The user-friendly graphic interface includes a full-color, hi-def animated menu, with features such as advanced subtitle functions, video scene search and pop-ups--which provide informative tidbits and are embedded in Blu-ray Disc contents. And the unique 11-in-2 multi-format memory card slot displays 3-megapixel and larger images in full hi-def resolution. It's compatible with Secure Digital (SD), MultiMedia (MMC), CompactFlash, MicroDrive, XD Picture Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Duo Pro, Memory Stick Pro, RS MMC, and Mini SD. Other technical features include

  • Up to 1080p (1920 x 1080p) output through HDMI digital output
  • Selectable 1080p/1080i/720p video upconversion of DVDÕs through HDMI
  • BD-RE, BD-ROM, DVD ROM, DVD RAM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW playback compatible
  • MPEG2, VC-1, H.264, HD JPEG decoding
  • 12-bit/192MhZ video D/A converter; 24-bit/192KHz audio D/A converter

The BD-P1000 provides a full range of audio decoding, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby DTS, and MP3. It has stereo outputs as well as coaxial and optical digital audio outputs for 5.1-channel home theater surround sound. It offers the following video output connection options:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 1
  • S-Video: 1
  • Component Video: 1
  • HDMI: 1

Blu-ray Disc Format
The next-generation Blu-ray optical disc format was created by a group of the world's top consumer electronics companies, including Samsung and Sony. This format was intended to meet the demand for playing and recording high-definition content, which far surpasses the video quality DVD can handle. With remarkable high quality video and crisp audio clarity, Blu-ray also offers increased storage capacity--up to 25 GB of content on a single-sided disc and enough space for two hours of high-definition movies or recorded content. (This is over five times the 4.7 GB of data a standard single-sided DVD disc can store.) The name Blu-ray is derived from the blue-violet laser the player uses to read and write to the disc.

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

  • High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines.

What's in the Box
Blu-ray DVD player, remote control (multibrand for TVs; comes with batteries), printed operating insructions

Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player Specifications

Samsung presents the highest-definition playback in the world: the BD-P1000 Blu-ray Disc Player. The increased storage capacity of Blu-ray discs allows the Samsung BD player to offer an astounding 25 GB of content on a single-sided disc (50 GB per dual layer) - nearly six times the capacity of traditional DVDs and enough space for two hours of high-definition movies or recorded content. Be among the first to view and enjoy Blu-ray format discs on your HDTV. You'll marvel at the clarity and full-color spectrum of every scene, while multi-channel sound puts you in the center of the action. Samsung technology also offers backward compatibility, letting you enjoy your favorite CDs and DVDs. The BD-P1000 even takes your current DVD library and upconverts it to a near hi-def experience via 720p/1080i and 1080p when used with an HDMI connection. The user-friendly graphic interface includes a full-color, hi-def animated menu, with features such as advanced subtitle functions, video scene search and informative pop-ups. Two HDMI ports connect your HDTV Home-Theater System and other digital devices. Samsung's 11-in-2 multi-memory card slot displays 2 megapixel and larger images in full Hi-Def resolution.

Most of all Hollywood movies are shot at 24 frames per second, and Blu-ray Disc movies are mastered at 24 frame per second, so it is only fitting that the Sony Blu-ray Disc Players can output your films at 1080/24p for a true film-like experience at home. Of course, Sony Blu-ray Disc Players can also output at 1080/60p for more traditional HDTV sets on the market. Either way Sony has you covered for the best picture possible in Full 1080p.

Backwards compatible and Upscaling
All existing Blu-ray Disc players will play your standard DVD collection without a problem. And with built-in 1080p video upscaling, they'll look even better.

More Bits

more bitsIn the digital world, picture quality is not just about resolution, but also about bit rates.

More Sound

Dolby TrueHD internal decoding and bitstream output via HDMI for the Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD (Master Audio and High Resolution Audio) codes delivers studio quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment like Blu-ray Disc movies, with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound that is virtually indistinguishable from the original studio version. 7.1 channel analog output provides connectivity to older receivers, making the player compatible with your existing audio system with 7.1 analog inputs.

The BDP-S550 is compatible with Dolby TrueHD, Dolby’s next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. Dolby TrueHD delivers tantalizing sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, unlocking the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs. When coupled with high-definition video, Dolby TrueHD offers an unprecedented home theater experience that lets you enjoy sound as stunning as the high-definition picture.

Xross Media Bar

Xross television interfaceXross (pronounced Cross) is Sony's Technical-Emmy award-winning graphic user interface for Sony WEGA and BRAVIA televisions and PS3 and PSX game systems. The interface features category icons spread horizontally across the screen that organize the viewing options (TV, Music, Internet, Tools, etc...). When a category icon is selected on the horizontal bar, a vertical bar appears showing the viewing options within that category. Using the directional pad on your remote, you can easily maneuver horizontally from category to category, then scroll vertically through individual viewing options to easily navigate through the wide range of programming available on today's televisions.

BD-Live

BD-Live screenshotBD-Live is a Blu-ray feature that enables you to access special content via an internet-connected Blu-ray player.

HDMI Features

x.v Color

Standard RGB Color Profile
RGB Color Range
xvycc Color
xvYCC Color Range
Thanks to the adoption of a newly approved international color standard called xvYCC (an option in the HDMI v1.3 spec and which Sony participated in creating), the color space has been greatly expanded.

All Sony XBR HDTVs support the xvYCC color profile (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or "x.v. color" for short. Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation "xvYCC" color space actually offers an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize.

Bravia SyncAs a leader in products with HDMI connectivity, Sony has created BRAVIA Sync to gobeyond simple audio and video transmission. When combined with a select number of BRAVIA televisions and other Sony audio and video products, in addition to audio and video transmission, control functions will betransmitted via the HDMI cable. With "One Touch Play," operations that took several steps have been reduced to one. Press the PLAY button on the remote, watch the audio and/or the video component(s) turn on then the BRAVIA television turn on and switch to the correct video input–Simple–Easy–BRAVIA Sync.
